Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem urges Armenia authorities to stop interfering in Church’s internal affairs

The Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, Archbishop Nourhan Manougian, has expressed his support for the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin II.

The respective statement notes that the actions carried out by a defrocked clergyman with the explicit backing of Armenia state authorities are not only illegal and contrary to ecclesiastical regulations, but also undermine the authority of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church, offend the feelings of the faithful, and endanger Armenian national identity and spiritual values.

“In these difficult times, when our people face internal and external challenges, the Armenian Apostolic Church continues to be an important pillar of national unity, faith, and hope. Therefore, every action directed against the [Armenian Apostolic] Church is also a strike at our historical memory and spiritual values,” the statement adds.

Interference by Armenian state bodies in the internal affairs of the Armenian Apostolic Church is deemed unacceptable, as is support for defrocked individuals in attempts to seize the territory of Hovhannavank church and conduct invalid Divine Liturgies.

“We strongly condemn these illegal and dishonorable actions and call on the [Armenian] authorities to stop interfering in the [Armenian Apostolic] Church’s internal life, restore justice and legality, and ensure the safe and peaceful work of the [Armenian Apostolic] Church’s ministers,” the statement emphasizes.

At the end of the statement, Archbishop Manougian expresses his solidarity with Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II and the entire clergy of the Armenian Apostolic Church, lauding their devoted service and steadfast faith. Also, he expresses hope that the Armenian state bodies will take prudent measures to preserve social harmony, uphold the rule of law, and respect the Armenian national spiritual heritage.
