September 21 is Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia

Today, September 21, the Republic of Armenia celebrates Independence Day: the third republic turns 34.

On September 21, 1991, based on the provisions of the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, the parliament decided to hold a referendum throughout the republic on secession from the USSR and independence.

The overwhelming majority of the republic’s population—94.39 percent of eligible voters, or 2 million 43,000 people—voted “yes” to independence. Following the referendum, on September 23, 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic declared Armenia an independent state.

In 1991, 48 countries recognized the independence of the Republic of Armenia. On March 2, 1992, our country became a full member of the United Nations.
